In 2007 we began publishing beautifully illustrated picture books for children about the countries and islands of the Pacific Rim that embrace the Ring of Fire. Our books are developed in tandem with author/playwright Dr. Tamara Montgomery and illustrator Joseph D. Dodd of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Learning and performing arts CDs included in the books or on our CalabashBooks.com website help children expand their understanding of the endangered animals, environments and cultures of the Pacific Rim. Click on Order Books Here above to find out more. Our first book, Kraken-ka, The Komodo Dragon, A Tale of Indonesia, received the 2008 Honorable Mention award for Excellence in Children's Illustrative or Photographic Books from the Hawai‘i Book Publishers Association.

When The Cassowary Pooped, A Tale of New Guinea, written by Tamara Montgomery and illustrated by Joseph D. Dodd, debuted as a play for children aged 4 to 8 at Kennedy Theatre on the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus in Honolulu on September 28. Young audiences from schools around the island of Oahu who attended during the following week were delighted with the antics of the Cassowary and the colorful story. The play, which was adapted for the stage by Dr. Montgomery who was also the director, was a great hit, as was the book. Colorful sets designed by Joseph D. Dodd included trees that "grew" on stage whenever the hungry Cassowary pooped.
